Help Talented Young Athletes to Excel at the University of Bath.
In 1976 Bath became the first UK University to offer sports scholarships to students.
University of Bath Sports Scholars have included London 2012 Olympic silver medallists Michael Jamieson (swimming) and Samantha Murray (modern pentathlon), as well as PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic bronze-medallist Dom Parsons (skeleton).
Ivor Powell
Ivor Powell was a football coach at the University from 1972 to 2010, when he retired aged 93.
The Ivor Powell Sports Scholarship Fund was set up after his death and supports exceptional athletes - who either are already or have the ability to become elite international athletes - applying to study at the University of Bath. The Scholarship honours Ivor’s many years of service at the University, and allows his determination and winning attitude to live on in future students.
Recipients of the Ivor Powell Sports Scholarship receive £2,000 a year for each of their three years of study. This funding allows them to focus on their training and studies, without added financial pressure.
Help us reach our £6,000 target and ensure the Ivor Powell Scholarship can continue to change the lives of talented young people.
Rio 2016 Olympian Joe Choong combined studying Mathematics at Bath with competing at international level for Pentathlon GB and received an Ivor Powell Sports Scholarship to support him in his studies and in his sport.
He is ready to return a strong contender, having set the Tokyo 2020 qualifying standard when he won Modern Pentathlon World Cup Final gold in the Olympic host city earlier this year.
“Being able to achieve my dream of competing at an Olympic Games was the greatest feeling. I can't thank everyone who has supported me enough. I would like to thank the Ivor Powell Scholarship fund for believing in me when I started my journey at the University.”
Sports Scholarships
Combining a degree with intensive sports training is hard work, and bright, talented young sportsmen and women can struggle to find time for a part-time job in between their training and study schedules. A sporting scholarship from the University of Bath can help them to make ends meet, and pay for things like extra equipment and travel to competitions that will see them excel in their field.
“The University was the perfect place to enjoy sports, train really hard, and also study for a very academic degree.” Samantha Murray (BA French & Politics 2013), Santander Scholar
